Director John Sturgess’ The Great Escape is a classic. The book was written by Paul Brickhil and the screenplay by James Clavell. Favourite movie of all time? I’d say it’s right up there in the top 3. This is a war film based on actual events and it is historically accurate, more than it s often given credit for.
The cast is an ensemble of amazing actors. While I am a huge Steve McQueen fan, the other performances are equally or even more impressive. Here is a short list of some of these actors, Richard Attenborough, James Garner, Donald Pleasance, Charles Bronson and Gordon Jackson are all excellent. James Coburn, James Donald, David McCallum, Charles Bronson, Angus Lennie, John Leyton, Nigel Stock, Robert Graf add their own unique talents to this wonderful film and Hannes Messemer is exceptional as the sympathetic Commandant.
