As children, my brother, sister and I watched this film every time it came on. I find that the current crop of action films depend on special effects to draw their audience. I’ve never found it necessary. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) proves this and I find it has stood the test of time. The plot is fairly simple and the message is direct. A gentlemanly alien lands on Earth and tells us that we must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets. Most well-known for being the director of The Sound of Music, Robert Wise directed this classic. It’s one of the best science-fiction films of all time and it is a masterpiece!
