This is one of my favourite films! My best friend and I even performed a version of this in our French class. I had seen the film years before, when I was 10 or 11. They used to rerun these great films all the time, now PBS or Public Broadcasting Service, TVO, TCM and Silver Screen are practically the only channels that show these cinematic classics.
I was absolutely fascinated with the talented French actress Simone Signoret. I also loved her very chic sounding name! I watched the film with my brother and needless to say, our younger sister found it difficult to forgive us for many years for watching this terrifying film when she was in the room.

The story revolves around two women, Simone Signoret and Vera Clouzot (the wife of Henri-Georges play the mistress and wife of a sadistic boarding school headmaster. Paul Meurisse in his most celebrated role, is compelling in his portrayal of this unsympathetic victim. This wonderful actor could play any role, from comedic and drily humourous to serious and dramatic roles and in this case, this menacing and sadistic lover. The two women plot to kill him and strange events begin to happen.
You’ll have to try to catch this on tv sometime if you want to know the ending. Don’t miss it if it ever comes across your screens, watch in the dark if you can, it’s a masterpiece!
